What VAT is in Nepal
Value Added Tax is a consumption tax charged on most goods and services. The standard rate is 13%. Registered businesses collect it from customers, claim credit for the VAT they paid on their own purchases, and pay the difference to the Inland Revenue Department. The tax is ultimately borne by the final consumer, which is why the arithmetic matters to anyone writing an invoice or checking a bill.
VAT-exclusive vs VAT-inclusive
This is where most mistakes happen. The two modes answer different questions.
VAT exclusive — tax added on top
You know the base price and need the total.
- VAT = net × 0.13
- Gross = net × 1.13
On a net price of Rs. 10,000: VAT is Rs. 1,300 and the invoice total is Rs. 11,300.
VAT inclusive — tax extracted from the total
You have a gross amount and need to know how much of it is tax.
- Net = gross ÷ 1.13
- VAT = gross − net
On a gross amount of Rs. 11,300: the net is Rs. 10,000 and the VAT portion is Rs. 1,300. Note that taking 13% of Rs. 11,300 gives Rs. 1,469 — a common and expensive error. Always divide when the amount already includes tax.
Where people get VAT wrong
- Applying 13% to a gross figure. It overstates the tax, as shown above.
- Assuming every price includes VAT. Quotations are often exclusive; retail shelf prices are usually inclusive. Check the wording on the invoice.
- Charging VAT while unregistered. Only businesses registered for VAT may collect it and issue a VAT invoice.
- Treating exempt and zero-rated as the same thing. Exports are typically zero-rated, meaning input credit is still available. Exempt supplies carry no output VAT and no input credit, which changes your cost base.
- Rounding at every line. Round once at the invoice level to avoid drift on long bills.
Registration and filing, in plain terms
VAT registration becomes compulsory once your turnover crosses the threshold set for your activity, and it is mandatory from the start for certain listed businesses. Registered taxpayers file returns and pay on a fixed cycle — monthly, bi-monthly, or four-monthly depending on the category assigned to them — and must keep purchase and sales records that support each return.
Thresholds, categories, and due dates are revised from time to time, so confirm your own position with the Inland Revenue Department or your accountant rather than assuming last year’s rule still applies. This calculator deliberately handles only the arithmetic, which does not change.
Frequently asked questions
Is VAT in Nepal always 13%?
13% is the standard rate and it covers most taxable transactions. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, so check the treatment of your specific goods or service with IRD.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Divide the total by 1.13. The result is the net amount, and the difference is the VAT. The inclusive mode above does this for you.
Can I change the rate in the calculator?
Yes. The rate field is editable, which is useful when you are checking a historical invoice or modelling a different rate.
Does the PDF work as a tax invoice?
No. It is a calculation record for your own reference. A valid VAT invoice must be issued by a registered business and contain the details prescribed by law.
