How Is VAT Calculated in Nepal?

The calculator uses Nepal’s standard 13% VAT rate for taxable supplies.

The Inland Revenue Department currently confirms that the VAT rate is 13%. The legal framework comes from the Value Added Tax Act, 2052 and its subsequent amendments.

Formula to Add VAT

Use the following formula when you know the net or VAT-exclusive amount:

VAT amount = Net amount × 13%

Gross amount = Net amount + VAT amount

You can also calculate the gross amount directly:

Gross amount = Net amount × 1.13

Add VAT Example

Suppose a VAT-registered business sells a taxable service for NPR 10,000 before VAT.

VAT amount:

NPR 10,000 × 13% = NPR 1,300

Gross amount:

NPR 10,000 + NPR 1,300 = NPR 11,300

The customer therefore pays NPR 11,300, including NPR 1,300 VAT.

Formula to Remove VAT

Use the following formula when the available amount already includes VAT:

Net amount = Gross amount ÷ 1.13

After finding the net amount:

VAT amount = Gross amount − Net amount

Remove VAT Example

Suppose a bill shows a VAT-inclusive total of NPR 10,000.

Net amount:

NPR 10,000 ÷ 1.13 = NPR 8,849.56

VAT amount:

NPR 10,000 − NPR 8,849.56 = NPR 1,150.44

The NPR 10,000 gross amount therefore contains approximately NPR 1,150.44 VAT.

Remove VATNPR 10,000 grossNPR 8,849.56NPR 1,150.44NPR 10,000.00

Minor differences can occur if invoicing or accounting software applies rounding to individual invoice lines. Businesses should use a consistent rounding method and retain the original invoice records.

Who Needs This VAT Calculator?

  • VAT-inclusive expenses
  • Output VAT collected from customers

It does not submit the return automatically.

Freelancers and Service Providers

Freelancers, consultants and service providers can use the tool when preparing quotations or checking invoices for taxable services.

However, working as a freelancer does not automatically allow someone to collect VAT. The person or business must have the required VAT registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current VAT rate in Nepal?

The standard VAT rate in Nepal is 13%. The Inland Revenue Department’s official VAT guidance confirms this rate. The VAT Calculator Nepal applies 13% automatically.

What is the difference between Add VAT and Remove VAT?

Add VAT converts a net amount into a gross amount. Use it when the entered amount does not include VAT.
Remove VAT extracts the net amount and VAT portion from a gross amount. Use it when the entered amount already includes VAT.

What does Net → gross mean?

Net → gross means converting a VAT-exclusive price into a VAT-inclusive price. For example, NPR 10,000 net becomes NPR 11,300 gross after adding 13% VAT.

What does Gross → net mean?

Gross → net means extracting the VAT-exclusive value from an amount that already includes VAT.
For example, NPR 10,000 gross contains approximately:
NPR 8,849.56 net value
NPR 1,150.44 VAT

Is the VAT rate editable?

No. The live calculator currently locks the VAT rate (%) field at 13%. This prevents accidental use of an incorrect standard Nepal VAT rate.

Can I calculate VAT by multiplying an inclusive price by 13%?

No. That method produces an incorrect VAT portion. To extract VAT from an inclusive price, divide the gross amount by 1.13: Net amount = Gross amount ÷ 1.13
Then subtract the net amount from the gross amount:
VAT amount = Gross amount − Net amount

Are all goods and services subject to 13% VAT in Nepal?

No. The 13% rate applies to standard taxable supplies, but not every good or service is treated in the same way. Schedule 1 of the VAT Act lists exempt goods and services. The listed categories include specified:
Basic agricultural products
Basic-need goods
Medicines and health services
Educational services
Books and printed materials
Passenger transportation
Land and buildings
Other legally specified supplies
A zero-rated supply is different from an exempt supply. Zero-rated transactions remain taxable supplies but carry a 0% rate. This treatment commonly applies to qualifying exports and other transactions specifically listed by law.
Check the exact legal classification before treating any product or service as exempt or zero-rated.

Do I need to show VAT separately on an IRD tax invoice?

Yes. A standard कर बिजक (Kar Bijak) issued by a VAT-registered supplier should show the taxable value, VAT amount and final total.
A standard Tax Invoice Nepal format normally includes:
Supplier’s name, address and VAT registration number
Invoice number and date
Customer details where required
Description and quantity of goods or services
Taxable value before VAT
Applicable VAT rate
VAT amount
VAT-inclusive total
The IRD separately recognises approved abbreviated tax invoices, which may show a VAT-inclusive price. These invoices are subject to specific conditions and limitations.

Does Download PDF create an official tax invoice?

No. Download PDF creates a record of the calculation only.
It does not produce:
An official Kar Bijak
An IRD-approved tax invoice
A VAT return
Proof that VAT was collected or paid
A VAT registration certificate
A VAT-registered supplier must issue invoices using the legally required format and approved invoicing process.

Does the calculator send my amount to the IRD?

No. The calculator performs the arithmetic inside your browser.
It does not log in to the IRD portal, access your PAN or VAT records, or submit a VAT return.

When was the calculator’s VAT rate last verified?

The calculator currently displays:
Last verified: 2026-08-31
It also links to the Inland Revenue Department as its official source.
Tax rules can change. Check the displayed verification date and current IRD publications before relying on a calculation for filing.
